Finding Half-Siblings with DNA: cM Ranges and Search Strategy

Half-siblings share around 1,750 cM on average, with a wide observed range. Here is how to confirm a half-sibling relationship and where to find support.

A half-sibling search is one of the most common reasons people take a consumer DNA test, and it is also one of the trickiest to interpret. The cM range for half-siblings overlaps heavily with grandparent, aunt or uncle, and niece or nephew relationships, which means a strong DNA match in the right range does not, on its own, name the relationship. This guide covers the cM numbers, the practical disambiguation steps, and the support resources for the specific contexts in which half-sibling discoveries usually happen: donor conception, non-paternity events, and adoption.

The cM range for half-siblings

Per the Shared cM Project, full siblings share an average of around 2,613 cM, with an observed range of roughly 2,209 to 3,384 cM. Half-siblings share an average of around 1,759 cM, with an observed range of roughly 1,160 to 2,436 cM.

Half-siblings sit in the same range as several other relationships. Grandparents and grandchildren share roughly the same average. Aunts or uncles and nieces or nephews share roughly the same average. Double first cousins land in the same range. The cM math alone narrows the candidates to that cluster; it cannot pick one.

How to disambiguate

Several pieces of information help narrow the candidates in the 1,300-2,300 cM cluster.

Age difference is one of the strongest signals. A match within ten years of your age is far more likely to be a half-sibling than a grandparent. A match thirty years older is far more likely to be an aunt, uncle, or grandparent.

X-DNA matching is informative when one or both parties are female. Half- siblings who share a mother also share more X-DNA than half-siblings who share a father. The X inheritance pattern in many tools, including GEDmatch and 23andMe’s chromosome browser, can sometimes distinguish maternal half- siblings from paternal half-siblings.

Shared matches are the most direct evidence. A half-sibling will share a roughly similar set of matches with you on one side of the family but not the other. A grandparent will share matches with you on only the side they descend from. The pattern of which shared matches appear, and which ancestral surnames or locations recur, usually identifies which side of your family the match connects through.

Y-DNA matching, if both parties are male, can confirm or rule out a paternal half-sibling relationship cleanly. The three most common contexts

Half-sibling discoveries arrive most often through three routes.

Donor conception is increasingly common as donor-conceived people reach adulthood, and as parents who used donor sperm or eggs in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s confront the reality that DNA testing has made anonymous donation effectively impossible. A donor-conceived person who tests will often find one or more half-siblings from the same donor in the database. Adoption is the third. An adoptee finds a biological half-sibling, or a person who was not adopted finds a half-sibling who was placed for adoption decades earlier. Contacting a half-sibling

There is no one right way to do this, and we are not going to prescribe one. The communities listed above have years of accumulated wisdom on contact, what to say in a first message, how to respond if the other person does not respond, and how to handle the various ways this can go. A pragmatic floor: contact through the testing platform’s messaging system first, not social media. Lead with shared interest in the family connection, not the most charged framing. Allow days or weeks for a response. If the match does not respond, that is also an answer; many people who appear in databases tested years ago and do not actively monitor their accounts.

When the discovery is hard

A half-sibling discovery is often, though not always, the surface of something larger about the family.
