How to Find Biological Parents with DNA: A Practical Search Strategy
A step-by-step search strategy for finding biological parents with DNA testing: which kits, raw data uploads, mirror trees, and where to find support along the way.
Searching for a biological parent with DNA testing is a real and effective strategy, and it is also long, emotional work. The basic mechanics are well understood at this point. The hard parts are patience, methodical note-keeping, and knowing where to turn when the search either succeeds or gets stuck. This guide covers the strategy. Start with AncestryDNA
AncestryDNA is the right first test for nearly every biological-family search done in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Its database, at roughly 25-30 million profiles as of early 2026, is the largest by a wide margin. The larger the database, the better the chance that a close enough biological relative has tested. Close means a half- sibling, an aunt or uncle, a grandparent, or a first cousin. A close match makes a search take weeks. Without one, searches can take months or years and still not resolve.
Buy the standard kit, not the Traits add-on. Submit your sample. Wait the 4-6 weeks for processing. Do not test at multiple companies at once; you want to see what AncestryDNA returns first because that is where your best chance lives.
Upload your raw data to other databases for free
Once your AncestryDNA results are in, download your raw DNA data file from the account settings. AncestryDNA exports the file as a zipped text file. Upload that file, free, to as many additional databases as you can:
- MyHeritage accepts free uploads and has a strong European database.
- FamilyTreeDNA accepts free uploads and has the oldest consumer DNA database.
- GEDmatch is a separate third-party site that accepts uploads from all major companies and offers more advanced tools.
- Living DNA accepts free uploads for an ancestry report.
A close biological relative who tested at, say, MyHeritage instead of AncestryDNA only shows up if you have your data in MyHeritage’s database. Uploading takes minutes and is the cheapest possible expansion of your search.
23andMe is a useful second database, but it does not accept raw uploads; you have to buy a separate kit. Given the post-bankruptcy uncertainty around 23andMe, we generally recommend prioritizing uploads first and considering a 23andMe test only if AncestryDNA and the upload sites do not yield a close enough match.
Identify your closest matches and work the tree
Sort your match list by total shared cM. The matches at the top are your closest biological relatives. Use the shared DNA and relationship chart to translate cM into candidate relationships. A 1,750 cM match could be a half-sibling, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, or a niece or nephew. An 850 cM match could be a first cousin, a great-grandparent, a great-niece, or a half-aunt.
For each of your top several matches, write down their public family tree information if any is attached. Note their age, the parts of the country they live in, and any clues to which side of their family connects to you. Tools like AncestryDNA’s ThruLines and MyHeritage’s Theory of Family Relativity sometimes propose common ancestors automatically; treat those as hypotheses to verify, not conclusions.
Build mirror trees from your match cousins
The standard tool of the genetic genealogist is the mirror tree. You pick a match cousin who has a strong public tree, and you build a copy of that tree in your own AncestryDNA account, extending it backward and outward. The goal is to find a common ancestor at the top of your match cousin’s tree and follow the descendants downward to identify the candidate biological parent.
This is slow work. A typical search uses several mirror trees from different match cousins and looks for where they converge. Convergence at a particular couple a few generations back, combined with cM amounts that fit your relationship to multiple cousins, narrows the candidate parent to a small set or sometimes a single person.
Get help when you need it
Search work is technical and emotional in roughly equal measure. There are volunteer and paid communities of search angels and professional genetic genealogists who specialize in biological-family searches.

What to expect
A search with a known half-sibling or grandparent match can resolve in days. A search with only second and third cousins at the top of the match list usually takes months and may require waiting for closer relatives to test as the databases grow. Roughly half of searches that start with no close matches do eventually succeed, often after a year or more of patient work.
