The short answer
If you only want to know your paternal haplogroup label as a curiosity, the haplogroup that comes with 23andMe is enough. If you want to do real paternal-line genealogy, join surname projects, or break down a brick wall on the male side, FamilyTreeDNA is essentially the only consumer option.
The difference between a haplogroup label and Y-STR matching
A Y-DNA haplogroup is a broad branch of the human paternal tree, often shared by millions of men whose common paternal-line ancestor lived thousands of years ago. Knowing your haplogroup is interesting (your branch might be R-M269 or I-M170 or E-M81), but it does not connect you to any individual living person. Two unrelated men can share a haplogroup. 23andMe reports a haplogroup label and stops there.
Y-STR matching compares short tandem repeat counts across specific markers on your Y chromosome with other tested men. If two men match at Y-37 with a small genetic distance, they likely share a common paternal-line ancestor within a genealogically meaningful timeframe (often within a few hundred years). At Y-67 and Y-111, the resolution improves. At Big Y-700, FTDNA also tests SNPs across the testable Y, which can place you on a much finer twig of the paternal tree and predict paternal-line matches more precisely. None of that is possible from a haplogroup label alone.
Database and matching
FamilyTreeDNA runs the largest dedicated Y-DNA matching database in the consumer market, with surname projects hosted directly on the platform. 23andMe does not run a Y-DNA matching database at all; the Y-DNA information stops at the haplogroup readout. Its overall autosomal database is approximately 14 million as of early 2026, but that does not help paternal-line research.
Price and value
23andMe bundles the Y-DNA haplogroup label into its Ancestry service at the standard price (historically near $99, verify post-bankruptcy). FamilyTreeDNA’s Y-DNA tests are priced separately: Y-37 at the entry point, with Y-67, Y-111, and Big Y-700 at approximately $449 (frequently discounted). The Big Y is more expensive than most autosomal tests because it is doing fundamentally more work on the Y chromosome.
If a paternal label is enough, you do not need to pay for a dedicated Y-DNA test at all. If you want match-level resolution, FTDNA’s pricing reflects that you are buying a different product.
