Dog DNA and Genetic Disease Screening: What the Tests Actually Check
We walk through what dog DNA health screening covers: inherited diseases, drug sensitivities, and breed predispositions, and how owners should use the results.
Dog DNA health screening checks your dog’s sample against a panel of known disease-associated variants. The result is a status for each variant: clear, carrier, or at risk. None of those statuses is a veterinary diagnosis. They are starting points for a conversation with your vet.
The three categories of variants screened
Inherited diseases. The classic examples are progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), degenerative myelopathy (DM), exercise-induced collapse (EIC), and von Willebrand disease type 1. These are conditions where a specific mutation is well-characterized in one or more breeds and the screening test detects the mutation directly.
Drug sensitivities. MDR1 (multidrug resistance 1, also called ABCB1) is the headline example. Dogs with the MDR1 variant cannot safely metabolize several common veterinary drugs. Washington State University’s Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory maintains the canonical reference for MDR1. Both Embark and Wisdom Panel screen for it.
Breed predispositions. Hip dysplasia, certain heart conditions, and a range of orthopedic and ophthalmologic conditions have a heritable component but are not driven by a single mutation. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) maintains registries for breeders. A DNA screen alone does not predict hip dysplasia, because the trait is polygenic and shaped by environment. Your vet may recommend imaging if your dog’s breed mix has a strong predisposition.

How to read a flagged result
A “carrier” status means your dog carries one copy of a recessive variant and is not expected to develop the disease but could pass it to offspring. An “at risk” status means your dog carries two copies of a recessive variant, or one copy of a dominant variant, and is therefore at elevated genetic risk. Risk is not certainty. Some variants are highly penetrant (most dogs with the variant develop the disease); others are not.
The right next step is always your vet. Share the screening report and ask whether further testing, monitoring, or treatment is warranted. The WSAVA hereditary disease guidelines are a useful reference for vets and informed owners alike.
What screening will not do
DNA screening will not catch conditions outside its panel. It will not detect environmentally driven disease, infection, or cancer. It is not a replacement for routine veterinary care. Treat a clean report as one useful data point, not as a clean bill of health.
