DNA Test Match Quality Comparison: Cousins, Centimorgans and Tools
How DNA match quality differs across AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA, including triangulation tools and common-ancestor hints.
“Match quality” is not a single number. It is several things stacked: how many matches you have, how accurately the shared centimorgan amounts are reported, what tools you have to investigate the match, and how good the common-ancestor hinting is. Here is how the major brands compare across each dimension as of early 2026.
Sheer number of matches
This tracks database size and there is no contest.
AncestryDNA typically produces 20,000+ matches for a user of European descent and often well over 50,000. Its database of 25 to 30 million users dwarfs the rest.
23andMe caps free match lists at around 1,500 matches by default; the actual count behind that cap is much higher.
MyHeritage DNA and FamilyTreeDNA produce far smaller match lists in absolute terms but include matches the bigger brands do not have.

Centimorgan accuracy
All four major brands report shared centimorgans (cM), the standard unit of genetic distance for matching. Methods differ in how they handle small segments under about 7 cM, which is where the noise sits. AncestryDNA’s Timber algorithm strips out many small segments considered population-level rather than recent. MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA include more small segments, which means their cM amounts can run slightly higher for the same true relationship.
In practice, all four brands are accurate enough at the close-cousin level. Differences matter most at distant matches under 20 cM, which are inherently ambiguous regardless of brand.
Triangulation tools
Triangulation means confirming that three or more matches share the same DNA segment, which suggests a common ancestor on a specific chromosome.
MyHeritage offers a strong triangulation view through its chromosome browser. FamilyTreeDNA offers triangulation through its Family Matching tool. 23andMe lets you see chromosome overlap. AncestryDNA does not offer triangulation or a chromosome browser at all, which is the single biggest complaint from advanced genealogists about an otherwise dominant product.
Common-ancestor hints
This is where the tooling really diverges.
AncestryDNA’s ThruLines connects DNA matches to specific ancestors in your tree, proposing a likely path from you to the match through a common ancestor. ThruLines requires both you and the match to have public trees and is one of the most powerful features in consumer DNA testing. It is also occasionally wrong, especially in trees with errors.
MyHeritage’s Theory of Family Relativity does similar work, often pulling in records and other users’ trees to propose a connection. It runs against the MyHeritage record corpus, which is strong for European lines.
23andMe and FamilyTreeDNA do not offer comparable automated common-ancestor hints. FamilyTreeDNA has Family Matching, which groups maternal and paternal matches but does not propose a named ancestor.
What “high quality” actually means for you
If you have a clear paper trail and want to use DNA to fill gaps in it, AncestryDNA’s ThruLines plus a paid subscription is the most productive combination for European and US lines.
If you are doing serious chromosome work to confirm relationships, MyHeritage or FamilyTreeDNA’s tools beat AncestryDNA’s lack of a chromosome browser.
If you are doing Y-DNA surname research, only FamilyTreeDNA matters.
